MELCOM Disaster: OFFICIAL Figures - ...Breakdown Of The Rescued (As At Midday)

Following the collapse of the Melcom Shopping Complex at Achimota in Accra yesterday, 69 persons have been rescued so far.

A total of 34 females and 33 males were rescued yesterday with 2 more rescued this morning at 0730 and 0900 hrs. However, a total of 8 have been recovered dead, 3 yesterday and 5 this morning.

The breakdown of the rescued and hospitals they have been sent to are as follows:

a. 37 Military Hospital- 15 females 17 males

b. Police Hospital- 3 females

c. Achimota Hospital - 14 females 16 males

d. Korle Bu- 2 females 2 males

Rescue efforts are feverishly underway to save others trapped under the rubble. Rescue efforts have been intensified with 3 more additional rescue points.

So far there has been effective collaboration between National Disaster Management Organisation, the Police Service, National Fire Service, Ghana Red Cross and the Accra Metropolitan Assembly. Others are:

a. National Ambulance Services.

b. National Security Ambulance Services

c. St. John’s Ambulance Services.

Assistance & High Profile Visits

The locals and artisans close to the scene of the incident have been another important component of the rescue efforts. There has been tremendous assistance from corporate institutions such as JA Plant Pool, Special Mineral Water, USAID, Rolider, Zoomlion, R & E Group and many others.

High profile visits so far include:

a. His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama

b. His Excellency Vice President Paa Kwesi Bekoe Amissah Arthur

c. Minister for Defence, Lt. Gen JH Smith

d. National Chairman & Running mate of the New Patriotic Party, Jack Obetsebi-Lamptey and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

e. The Mayor of Accra, Dr. Oko Vanderpuije.

f. Minister of the Interior, Hon W Aboah

g. Minister for Trade, Hon. Hannah Tetteh

h. Deputy Minister for Health, Hon Rojo Mettle-Nunoo

i. Presidential candidate of the CPP, Dr. Abu Sakara

j. A delegation from the Ga Traditional Area.

Yesterday the six-storeyed Melcom Shopping Complex at Achimota collapsed early morning trapping many people in the building. The Emergency Services reacted promptly to the disaster.

The Ghana Armed Forces and other Emergency Services wish to assure all that everything possible will be done to rescue the last person from the rubble. We require your unflinching support and cooperation at this difficult moment. All well meaning Ghanaians and institutions are reminded to support this worthy cause.
